Unlikely Allies: Philippe Troussier Tips Super Eagles As AFCON 2025 Title Contenders

As the countdown to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations continues, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are finding support from some unexpected quarters. One of the loudest endorsements has come from former Nigeria head coach Philippe Troussier, who believes the three-time African champions have what it takes to go all the way in Morocco.

Known across the continent as the “White Witch Doctor” for his intense methods and deep understanding of African football, Troussier’s words carry weight. And this time, Nigeria are firmly in his thoughts as potential champions.

Troussier Places Nigeria Among AFCON’s Elite

Speaking to Filgoal, Troussier described AFCON 2025 as one of the most competitive editions in history, driven by the sheer number of African stars excelling in Europe’s top leagues.

“I am confident that the tournament will be strong and competitive, especially with the large number of African players in the major European leagues, which makes the tournament more like a mini World Cup,” he said.

While the Frenchman tipped host nation Morocco as slight favourites, Nigeria were named in a stacked group of genuine contenders.

“For me, Morocco is in the lead, along with Ivory Coast, Senegal, Algeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Egypt after that,” Troussier added.

That list reads like a roll call of AFCON royalty, and Nigeria’s inclusion reinforces their status as one of the continent’s traditional powerhouses.

A Team Built On History And Hunger

Nigeria head into AFCON 2025 as three-time champions, level with Ivory Coast, and behind only Egypt, Cameroon, and Ghana in the all-time winners’ chart. But beyond history, there is emotion driving this squad.

The Super Eagles are still smarting from their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a heartbreaking playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo. That disappointment has sharpened focus and raised expectations heading into Morocco.

AFCON has often been Nigeria’s stage for redemption, and this squad is no different: talented, battle-hardened, and eager to restore pride.

Why Troussier’s Backing Matters

Troussier’s career has taken him across Africa, managing nations like Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, South Africa, and Morocco. His experience has taught him that AFCON success is rarely about hype alone.

Depth, mentality, and resilience often decide who lifts the trophy, and Nigeria possess all three in abundance.

While Morocco have already made a strong start with a polished opening win over Comoros, the tournament is long, unpredictable, and unforgiving. As history has shown, the Super Eagles tend to grow into AFCON tournaments rather than peak early.

AFCON 2025: Nigeria Back In The Spotlight

With respected voices like Troussier tipping them for success, Nigeria’s Super Eagles enter AFCON 2025 not just as participants, but as serious contenders.

Whether they turn that belief into silverware remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Super Eagles are no longer flying under the radar.

And in a tournament where belief often becomes destiny, that could make all the difference.
