Enzo Maresca Shuts Down Manchester City Return Talk As Chelsea Future Takes Centre Stage

Enzo Maresca On The Touchline As Chelsea Head Coach During A Premier League Match

Speculation travels fast in football — especially when Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City is being discussed. But Enzo Maresca has wasted no time in shutting down rumours suggesting he could be heading back to the Etihad Stadium as Guardiola’s successor.

The Chelsea head coach has been crystal clear: his focus is 100 percent on Stamford Bridge.

Guardiola succession talk heats up

Recent reports suggested Manchester City are quietly preparing contingency plans amid growing belief that the current season could be Guardiola’s last in charge. With the Catalan’s contract running down and his legacy already cemented, speculation about potential successors has intensified.

Maresca’s name inevitably surfaced. The Italian previously worked at City in two spells — first as U21 coach in the 2020/21 season, then as a first-team assistant — earning admiration within the club’s hierarchy for his tactical intelligence and calm leadership.

“It’s just speculation” — Maresca responds

Speaking to reporters, Maresca made it clear the rumours mean absolutely nothing to him.

“It doesn’t affect me at all,” he said. “I know it’s 100 percent speculation. I have a contract here until 2029 and my focus is about this club. I’m very proud to be here.”

He even laughed off how quickly narratives change in football, adding: “One week ago it was Juventus, now it’s Manchester City. I don’t pay attention. My focus is on the Newcastle game.”

Direct, calm, and composed — very on brand for the Chelsea boss.

Chelsea commitment: no doubts, no drama

When pressed further on whether he would still be Chelsea manager next season and beyond, Maresca doubled down.

“Absolutely, yes,” he said. “I have a contract until 2029. It’s speculation, 100 percent.”

And with good reason. Maresca’s project at Chelsea is already showing tangible results. In just 18 months, he has guided the Blues to Conference League glory, Champions League qualification, and three semi-final appearances — all with one of the youngest squads in Europe.

“The target now is to improve,” Maresca explained. “Last season was good. Now we push forward.”

Guardiola’s seal of approval

Interestingly, Guardiola himself has praised Maresca in glowing terms — fuel for the rumours, perhaps, but also recognition of elite coaching ability.

“One of the best managers in the world,” Guardiola said. “What he has done at Chelsea doesn’t get enough credit. Winning trophies, qualifying for the Champions League in such a tough league with a young team — it’s exceptional.”

High praise from one of football’s greatest modern managers.

Bottom line

For now, there’s no chase, no secret meetings, no dramatic return to Manchester. Enzo Maresca is fully invested in Chelsea’s future, building something deliberate and sustainable.

And as football history has taught us — speculation makes headlines, but focus wins trophies.
