Manchester City continued their strong domestic cup run with a composed 2–0 victory over Brentford, sealing a place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.
Pep Guardiola’s side controlled proceedings for large spells at the Etihad, showing patience, quality, and cutting edge when it mattered most. Brentford showed early intent but ultimately lacked the precision needed to trouble the reigning champions.
City took the lead in the 32nd minute through a moment of pure brilliance. A well-worked set-piece routine ended with Rayan Cherki collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area. The young midfielder took a steadying touch before unleashing a stunning right-footed curl into the top corner, leaving the Brentford goalkeeper with no chance.
Brentford had their moments, especially in transition, but failed to convert promising situations into clear-cut opportunities. There was also controversy midway through the first half when Abdukodir Khusanov brought down Kevin Schade as the last man. Despite strong appeals for a red card, the referee opted for a yellow, allowing Brentford to keep all eleven players on the pitch.
City remained in control after the break and doubled their advantage in the 67th minute. Savinho’s effort took a decisive deflection off a Brentford defender, looping over the goalkeeper and into the net to give Guardiola’s men a comfortable cushion.
The second goal effectively ended any hopes of a Brentford comeback, with City managing the game professionally until the final whistle. The clean sheet and measured performance will please Guardiola as his side moves one step closer to silverware.
With this result, Manchester City advance into the final four of the EFL Cup, reinforcing their status as one of the tournament’s favourites. Attention now turns to the semi-final draw as City continue their pursuit of another domestic trophy.
