Aaron Ramsey Left Stunned As Pumas Tear Up Liga MX Contract After Missing Dog Ordeal

Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has opened up on the emotional and professional turmoil that brought his short Liga MX adventure to an abrupt end.

The Wales international admits he was “surprised and disappointed” after Mexican side Pumas UNAM terminated his contract, leaving him with what he described as “no choice” but to return home to Wales.

Ramsey’s time in Mexico was meant to be a fresh chapter. Instead, it turned into one of the most challenging periods of his career — both on and off the pitch.

A Promising Move That Quickly Unravelled

Ramsey joined Pumas in July, stepping outside his European comfort zone after spells with Juventus, Nice, and a brief return to Cardiff City as player-manager. However, injuries once again proved a stumbling block.

The 34-year-old managed just six appearances for the Liga MX side before suffering a hamstring injury, disrupting his rhythm and momentum.

But football soon became secondary.

The Missing Dog Ordeal That Changed Everything

In October, Ramsey’s family dog Halo, a beloved beagle, went missing in San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato. The incident was later described by his family as a “haunting” experience.

Ramsey returned to the UK to deal with the situation, offering a $20,000 reward in a desperate bid to find Halo. The disappearance sparked confusion and anger after reports claimed the dog vanished from a shelter under unclear circumstances.

Ramsey later wrote:

“You can leave your dog on a ranch and never see her again. Without any explanation? The cameras weren’t recording, a tracker couldn’t find her, no sightings, no body, and a pile of lies.”

The emotional strain, combined with injury setbacks, made life in Mexico increasingly difficult.

Contract Terminated — And Ramsey Didn’t See It Coming

Despite his absence, Ramsey was still contracted to Pumas until summer 2026. Initial reports suggested a mutual termination, but Ramsey has now clarified that the decision came as a shock.

Posting on Instagram, he said:

“With their help and a lot of hard work I was ready and match fit for the remaining games and I was looking forward to giving my best to the Pumas. Unfortunately my contract was terminated which was a surprise and obviously disappointing.”

He added that the termination left him with no option but to return to Wales, ending his Mexican spell prematurely.

Gratitude Despite The Disappointment

Despite the abrupt ending, Ramsey was keen to express appreciation for the people he encountered in Mexico, thanking the fans, coaching staff, and medical team for their support during a turbulent time.

“Thank you again for all the support through the time we spent in Mexico. It’s a beautiful place and we will definitely come back to visit soon.”

Pumas head coach Efrain Juarez had earlier hinted that Ramsey’s situation was being monitored closely, citing both personal issues and fitness concerns.

What Next For Aaron Ramsey?

Now back in Wales, questions surround Ramsey’s next move. Whether he transitions fully into coaching, takes on another short-term playing role, or steps away from football entirely remains to be seen.

What’s clear is that this chapter — marked by injury, uncertainty, and an emotional family ordeal — did not end the way Ramsey or Pumas envisioned.
