Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has opened up about the pressure and expectations that come with being one of the most prolific forwards in world football. The 25-year-old says he is judged differently from other attackers because of the record-breaking standards he has already set.
Haaland scored 36 goals in his debut Premier League campaign—still the highest total in league history. Last season, he netted 22 league goals, a figure many labeled an “underperformance,” something he finds both amusing and motivating.
In a recent conversation with legendary striker Gary Lineker, Haaland was teased about the possibility of scoring 40 goals. He responded by explaining how expectations around his performances have shifted.
“What would be a good season for me? I think if I got 20 goals you’d say, ‘it’s an OK season.’ If City win the league and I got 25 goals, it would be ‘a good season.’ 30 goals would be ‘a really good season,’ 35 goals ‘an amazing season,’ 36 goals ‘a really, really good season.’”
Haaland acknowledged that those numbers would be extraordinary for most players, but for him, they have become the benchmark.
Haaland is already on track for another outstanding year, with 15 league goals so far and a strong chance of reaching the 30-goal mark again.
However, he admitted that maintaining this level is not optional—it’s required.
“If not, they have to replace me. Because if I’m not delivering the goals and the things they need, they have to replace me. So there is a lot of pressure on me to deliver.”
Haaland’s comments reflect both his ambition and his understanding of the standards at Manchester City, where competition is fierce and output is everything.
