AFCON 2025

Salomon Kalou Names AFCON 2025 Favourites, Dark Horses And Rising Stars To Watch

AFCON 2025: Pride, Passion, And The Heartbeat Of Africa

Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Salomon Kalou has weighed in on the upcoming AFCON 2025 tournament, offering insights into his favourite teams, players to watch, and the rising stars who could announce themselves on the continental stage.

Speaking in a wide-ranging blog interview as part of his role as Duelbits Football Ambassador and SuperSport analyst, Kalou shared his unique perspective on Africa’s biggest football showcase.

Why AFCON Means More Than Football

For Kalou, the Africa Cup of Nations is about far more than just the game:

“AFCON is pride. It’s identity. For Africans, it’s more than football, it’s culture, it’s community, it’s history. Every match feels like a celebration of the continent itself.”

He also highlighted the unique atmosphere of AFCON compared to other international tournaments:

“The passion in the stadiums, the colors, the music — it’s unlike anything else in world football. AFCON carries the heartbeat of Africa, and that energy is unmatched.”

AFCON 2025 Favourites And Dark Horses

Kalou identified several teams as strong contenders for the 2025 edition:

  • Morocco: Hosts and worthy favourites, though the absence of Achraf Hakimi is a setback.

  • Egypt: Powered by Mohamed Salah, though Kalou notes he’s not at peak Liverpool form.

  • Algeria: A balanced and strong side.

  • Nigeria: Despite missing out on the World Cup, Nigeria boasts Osimhen, Lookman, Iwobi, and Chukwueze — all capable of beating anyone.

For the dark horse, Kalou is backing South Africa:

“Bafana Bafana have the spirit to shock people. They’re great odds on Duelbits, and they could surprise a lot of fans.”

Ivory Coast: What It Will Take To Go All The Way

Reflecting on his home nation, Kalou emphasized Ivory Coast’s midfield strength:

“Kessie, Sangare, Fofana — they’re hard to break down. Diomande at Sporting Lisbon is exceptional, and Diallo brings real attacking threat. There are positives everywhere, and I think we’ll go very close.”

With a mix of experience and emerging talent, Kalou believes Ivory Coast has the tools to compete for the trophy.

Rising Stars To Watch

Kalou also highlighted that AFCON isn’t just about the established stars:

  • Young talent across the continent will be using the tournament to announce themselves.

  • Players like Osimhen and Lookman could define the tournament, while newcomers may grab the spotlight on the world stage.

The Takeaway

AFCON 2025 promises excitement, passion, and surprises. With powerhouse teams, thrilling dark horses, and emerging stars, Kalou believes this edition will capture the spirit and heartbeat of African football like no other.
