The Sesko vs Gyokeres conversation has been heating up all season, and now a true Premier League legend has entered the chat. Former Everton and Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni, famously one of the most lethal finishers Nigeria ever produced, has shared his opinion—and he didn’t hold back.
Šeško and Gyokeres both arrived in England last summer as two of Europe’s most exciting striker options. They brought hype, big price tags, and even bigger expectations. But with both players still adjusting to life in the Premier League, debates have erupted about who is built for the grind of English football.
Yakubu, who scored an impressive 97 Premier League goals, weighed in on the conversation and came out firmly on one side:
“I think he’s more physical than Sesko. He’ll run the channels. He is quick… he’s really, really solid. He’s a raw striker.”
According to Yakubu, Viktor Gyokeres is better equipped for Premier League football. His size, power, and direct style of play—plus the ability to bully defenders—give him an edge over Sesko for now.
He also believes Arsenal have a gem on their hands despite Gyokeres’ injury setback, noting that the Swede only needs more time to adapt.
Both players arrived under big spotlights, but their starts have been mixed:
Fee: £66.3m + add-ons
Age: 22
Premier League appearances: 11
Goals: 2
Assists: 1
Sesko’s movement and intelligence are clear, but his inconsistency and difficulty adjusting to the physicality of the league have slowed his impact.
Fee: £55m from Sporting CP
Age: 27
Premier League appearances: 11
Goals: 4
Gyokeres arrived with more experience and immediate expectations, but he has also struggled with adapting to Arsenal’s tactical structure and periods of being out of the lineup.
Despite the slow start, Yakubu believes Gyokeres has all the tools needed to dominate once he fully settles.
Whether Yakubu is right or wrong, one thing is certain: the Premier League has two new long-term striker projects. Sesko’s ceiling is huge, Gyokeres’ physicality is undeniable, and both are still very much in the development phase.
For fans, pundits, and scouts, this debate is far from over—and that’s what makes football beautiful.
