Former Premier League striker Louis Saha has sounded a cautionary note for Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, warning that the 18-year-old may never reach the legendary heights of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Saha believes Yamal lacks the same “obsession” with football that has defined the careers of these icons, and cautioned against distractions that could hinder his development.
Yamal has already shown flashes of brilliance, scoring and assisting regularly for Barcelona, but Saha points out that off-field distractions could be dangerous for the young talent. The former Manchester United star cited Neymar as an example of a gifted player whose career was affected by lifestyle choices and excessive hype.
Saha said, “I doubt that he can achieve that because I see Lamine Yamal’s quality as a player, but I don’t see an obsession where you really focus on your football that Cristiano Ronaldo also has. These guys are absolutely insanely obsessed. Some distractions are already around Yamal, that’s not good.”
Despite his warning, Saha emphasized Yamal’s potential, urging patience and stability for the young player at Barcelona. “For the sake of the football we love, we want to see him develop in Barcelona, do well for Barcelona and be stable in Barcelona. I’m scared that this talent could be wasted because we are starting to see too many things in the papers about him,” Saha added.
The future is still bright for Yamal, but Saha’s words highlight the need for focus, discipline, and careful career choices if the teenager is to avoid following in the footsteps of other gifted players whose immense talent was not fully realized.
