Mike Maignan making a save for AC Milan in Serie A
AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan looks set to leave the club at the end of the season as a free agent, with no new contract talks currently scheduled. Juventus are closely monitoring the situation, while Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, are showing strong interest in the highly-rated French goalkeeper.
With his contract expiring, Maignan can begin negotiating with other clubs as early as January. Milan reportedly offered an extension until 2028, raising his salary from €2.8 million to €5.5 million per year, but talks have stalled. Juventus hope to secure the 30-year-old on a free transfer, capitalising on Milan’s hesitancy.
Chelsea are actively searching for a long-term replacement for Robert Sanchez and view Maignan as an ideal fit. The London club were close to signing him in June, but the deal was blocked by Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri, partly due to Milan’s ongoing plans to sign Strasbourg right-back Guela Doue.
Now, with Maignan free to negotiate and Juventus potentially weakened by UEFA financial investigations, Premier League clubs, especially Chelsea, may have the advantage in this transfer race.
Since joining from Lille in 2021, Maignan has made an immediate impact at San Siro, helping AC Milan win the 2021-22 Serie A title and recording the league’s most clean sheets. Despite injuries affecting his consistency in subsequent seasons, he has returned strongly this campaign, keeping four clean sheets and delivering crucial saves against top opponents like Roma and Inter.
His leadership, shot-stopping ability, and calm presence have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after goalkeepers, and his potential free transfer makes him an even more attractive target for top clubs.
