Idrissa Gueye apologising after red card incident with Michael Keane
Everton’s dramatic 1-0 victory at Old Trafford should have been the headline — but Idrissa Gueye’s early red card for striking his own team-mate, Michael Keane, stole the spotlight.
The midfielder didn’t hide from the moment. Within hours, he addressed the incident publicly and privately, setting the tone for what became one of the Premier League season’s strangest storylines.
The clash began after Keane confronted Gueye for giving the ball away, leading to angry words, shoving, and finally a hand to the face — enough for a straight red after VAR intervention.
Gueye immediately owned up to the mistake, posting:
“I want to apologise first to Michael Keane… Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour.”
Inside the dressing room, he had already spoken to the squad. According to goal-scorer Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, “Idrissa apologised to us at full-time… we move on.”
Instead of collapsing, Everton actually grew after going down to 10.
Dewsbury-Hall highlighted their mentality:
“We could have crumbled… but if anything, it made us grow.”
The midfielder’s first-half strike ended up sealing what became Everton’s first win at Old Trafford since 2013.
You’d expect fury from manager David Moyes. Instead, he found something to admire.
“I like my players fighting each other… if you want toughness, you need someone to act.”
Moyes did acknowledge the red was harsh, suggesting the referee acted too quickly. Even Gary Neville agreed, calling it “a slap without venom” and more deserving of a yellow.
From an in-team scuffle to a gritty 70-minute defensive masterclass, Everton produced one of the shock results of the season. And while Gueye will miss games for his actions, he may also have sparked an unlikely unity in the squad.
