Neymar holding his knee during a Santos match in the Brazilian league
Neymar just can’t catch a break — literally or figuratively.
As Santos fight for their lives in the Brasileiro Serie A relegation battle, their biggest star has been ruled out once again with a fresh injury concern that has left fans frustrated and the club deeply worried.
After recently returning from a hamstring injury, Neymar was finally getting back into rhythm. But just as momentum started to build, reports from BeIN Sports confirmed he has been dealing with knee discomfort all week, forcing him out of Santos’ crucial six-pointer against fellow strugglers Internacional.
The issue isn’t believed to be structural, but the pain has been enough to sideline him during a period where Santos need every ounce of star power they can get.
Neymar’s return to Santos at the start of 2025 was one of the biggest football storylines of the year. After terminating his Al-Hilal contract, the idea of the Brazilian superstar returning home created massive excitement — and massive expectations.
He was unveiled like a hero returning to his village. The talk was redemption. Revival. A road to the 2026 World Cup.
And while seven goals and three assists in 25 matches is respectable, Neymar has spent more time in recovery mode than on the field. His absences have coincided with Santos slipping into the relegation zone danger zone, and patience among the fanbase is beginning to thin.
Neymar’s contract expires at the end of 2025, making him a free agent just months before the World Cup.
Santos president Marcelo Teixeira insists both sides want the same thing:
“Neymar’s project is the 2026 World Cup. If there’s consensus, he will extend… I believe we’ll find a solution.”
But talks remain stalled, and although rivals Fluminense have publicly ruled themselves out, Neymar could enter the market again in early 2026.
For a player of his profile, that opens a whirlwind of possibilities — but also uncertainty.
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti may have left Neymar out of recent squads, but he hasn’t given up on him entirely.
His message was simple — and strict:
“Neymar is on the list. He has six months to show performance.”
Ancelotti also dropped a tactical hint, suggesting Neymar should now play more centrally rather than as a winger.
Modern football demands intensity, he said — and wide players simply can’t hide from defensive duties.
For Neymar, who has battled his body for almost five years, the challenge has never been clearer: stay fit, play well, and the World Cup remains within reach.
Another injury at such a critical stage raises questions:
Can he stay fit long enough to help save Santos?
Will a new contract be worth the risk for the club?
Is his World Cup dream slipping further away?
For now, everything depends on rehab, consistency, and whether his body can finally give him a break.
One thing is certain: the football world will be watching closely.
