Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is racing against time to return from a pubalgia injury ahead of the upcoming Champions League showdown against Chelsea. The 18-year-old has been sidelined since Spain duty and limited to individual training, but the club reports optimism after he partially returned to group sessions this week.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have set a clear objective: get Yamal match-ready for Chelsea. The winger has been dealing with groin discomfort for weeks, an injury described as “annoying rather than serious,” but one requiring careful treatment to avoid long-term complications.
The club implemented a two-phase rehabilitation program beginning November 10, starting with radiofrequency therapy followed by rest and structured physiotherapy. Yamal returned to partial group training on Wednesday at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, marking a key milestone after days of individual work.
Barcelona hope to have him available for the Champions League fixture, although his involvement in Saturday’s league clash with Athletic Club remains uncertain. If all goes to plan, seven to ten days is considered a realistic timeline for a full return.
The club doctors and external specialists have made it clear that Yamal’s injury is “tricky,” warning that any shortcut could result in months on the sidelines. Surgery was never considered, but an external Belgian specialist was brought in to oversee the recovery plan.
“The instructions are simple: take rehabilitation seriously, avoid unnecessary physical strain and media distractions,” said a club source. Yamal has committed fully, reducing public appearances and focusing exclusively on recovery work.
Beyond the physical challenge, Yamal has also taken steps to minimize distractions. Following El Clasico, he significantly cut back on media appearances, planning future content only if he plays against Chelsea.
In addition, Yamal has set up a physiotherapy zone and water-recovery systems at home, maintaining the professional routine expected from a player of his ambition. Despite the injury, he still delivered decisive contributions in recent games, scoring against Elche and Celta Vigo, and netting a goal and an assist in the Champions League draw with Club Brugge.
Barcelona’s meticulous approach aims to protect the winger’s long-term development while giving him the best chance to shine on Europe’s biggest stage.
