Paul Pogba Still In Doubt As Monaco Coach Gives ‘Down To Earth’ Update After Midfielder’s Long-Awaited Return Delayed Again
Monaco fans are still waiting with bated breath as Paul Pogba’s highly anticipated return to competitive football faces yet another delay. The 2018 World Cup-winning midfielder, who last played for Juventus in September 2023, has been sidelined due to an ankle sprain ahead of this month’s international break.
Despite returning to team training last weekend, Monaco head coach Sebastien Pocognoli urged caution. “I’m trying not to get ahead of myself,” Pocognoli said, emphasizing that Pogba’s comeback will happen when the timing is right. He also highlighted the Frenchman’s happiness and focus during training, stressing the importance of restoring his fitness before he takes the field.
Pogba’s journey back has been anything but smooth. After serving an 18-month doping ban—reduced from four years—the midfielder signed a two-year deal with Monaco earlier this year, aiming to rebuild his career. Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro, realistic about the challenges, had already warned fans that returning to peak condition after two years off would take time.
The club has designed a meticulous three-month rehabilitation program to help Pogba readapt to the intensity of Ligue 1 football. Unfortunately, injuries have repeatedly interrupted this process. A minor knock in October and a grade two ankle sprain just before the Paris FC clash have kept him sidelined, much to the frustration of fans, coaches, and Pogba himself.
Pocognoli also sees Pogba’s value beyond the pitch. He envisions the experienced midfielder mentoring younger players and passing on his knowledge and leadership to strengthen Monaco’s squad. “The more leaders we have, the more the pressure is distributed,” the coach said.
While fans are eager to see Pogba back in action, the club is determined to prioritize his long-term fitness and well-being. With a strong mindset and meticulous rehabilitation, Monaco hopes to eventually witness Pogba at his best once more, influencing games not just through skill, but through experience and leadership.
For sports fans tracking one of football’s most intriguing comebacks, Pogba’s journey is a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough—it’s patience, resilience, and proper conditioning that pave the way for greatness.
