President Bola Tinubu addressing sports matters during a national briefing.
After Nigeria’s heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Super Eagles to shift their focus toward the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns.
The Super Eagles fell 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo after a tense 1-1 draw in Rabat — a result that stunned millions of Nigerian fans and halted the dream of a 2026 World Cup appearance.
But Tinubu is urging calm, reflection, and immediate redirection.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president encouraged both players and supporters to take the defeat with grace and look ahead with determination.
According to the statement:
“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them.”
Tinubu also emphasized that this is a moment for introspection across all levels of Nigerian football.
“We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board.”
The president’s message comes at a crucial time. Nigeria’s playoff elimination sparked nationwide discussions about preparedness, tactics, leadership, and the overall direction of football development.
Tinubu’s statement signals three clear points:
The Super Eagles still have major tournaments ahead
AFCON preparation must become the new priority
Everyone—players, coaches, administrators, and fans—must stay united
With AFCON approaching, the focus now shifts to restructuring, rebuilding confidence, and ensuring the team delivers on the continental stage.
Nigeria remains one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses, and despite the disappointment in Rabat, the journey continues. The AFCON campaign presents a fresh opportunity for redemption and resurgence.
Tinubu’s message sets the tone:
Learn, rebuild, and move forward — together.
