Lionel Messi visiting the renovated Spotify Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has addressed speculation over a possible January return of club legend Lionel Messi. The rumors intensified after Messi made a surprise late-night visit to the revamped Spotify Camp Nou, sharing photos on social media and hinting at a reunion.
Messi, who recently extended his contract with Inter Miami through 2028, has also spoken fondly of Barcelona in interviews, saying he misses the city and his former home. However, Laporta quickly dismissed the possibility of a loan return, telling Catalunya Radio: “Out of respect for Messi, our players, and our members, it’s not the time to speculate with unrealistic scenarios.”
The surprise visit to Camp Nou caught Laporta off guard. “I didn’t know he was coming, but the Spotify Camp Nou is his home,” he said. Laporta described the trip as a “sweet little spur-of-the-moment decision” and emphasized the club’s commitment to honoring Messi with a proper tribute once renovations are complete.
Messi left Barcelona hastily for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 without a chance to say goodbye to fans. The 38-year-old recently reiterated his desire to return to Barcelona with his family in the future, though a permanent comeback is impossible due to his new MLS contract. Speculation has circulated that he could return on loan in January to maintain fitness before Inter Miami’s 2026 MLS pre-season, potentially keeping an eye on the next World Cup.
Despite fan excitement, Laporta remains firm: Messi’s visit was a heartwarming personal gesture, but there are no immediate plans for him to play again at Camp Nou. The club continues to plan a grand tribute to Messi, celebrating his legendary career once the stadium is fully renovated.
