Justine Madugu Vows To Make Super Falcons A More Attacking Force

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has set his sights on transforming Nigeria’s women’s national team into a more attacking and expressive side, breaking away from the pragmatic, defense-first philosophy of former coach Randy Waldrum.

Madugu, who took over the reins last year after serving as Waldrum’s assistant, believes it’s time for the Falcons to fully embrace their natural flair and attacking instincts on the pitch.

From Defensive Solidity To Attacking Freedom

Under Waldrum, particularly during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Super Falcons became known for their disciplined defending and counterattacking style — a strategy that helped them hold their own against strong sides like Australia and England.

However, Madugu wants more. Speaking to The Guardian’s Osasu Obayiuwana, the 60-year-old tactician emphasized the need for a system that reflects the vibrant, fearless spirit of Nigerian football.

“They adopted a more defensive approach and relied a bit on the counterattack,” Madugu said about Waldrum’s tenure.

“But for us, as Africans, as Nigerians, we love expressing ourselves [on the pitch] … When you defend and regain possession, what do you do? You attack. It’s more about numbers — how many people are playing at the back, and how many are going forward.”

A New Era Of Expressive Football

Madugu’s attacking vision began to take shape at the 2024 WAFCON, where the Super Falcons overcame a slow start to explode in the knockout rounds — scoring 10 goals in three matches against Zambia, South Africa, and Morocco to secure their record-extending 10th title.

Now, with qualification for the 2026 WAFCON already sealed following a convincing win over Benin Republic, Madugu is focused on building a side that not only dominates Africa but also excites fans with fluid, attacking football.

The Falcons, he insists, will not just defend their crown — they will do it in style.
