Calvin Bassey Fulham defender during Premier League match
Galatasaray’s fascination with Nigerian stars is far from over. After securing Victor Osimhen on loan at the start of last season, the Turkish champions are now being linked with Fulham’s powerful defender, Calvin Bassey.
The 28-year-old centre-back, who was voted Fulham’s Player of the Season last term, has been a key figure in Marco Silva’s side. His defensive strength, leadership, and ability to play from the back have made him one of the most dependable defenders in the Premier League — but that hasn’t stopped Galatasaray from dreaming big.
According to Turkish journalist Arda Ozkurt, as relayed by Pesindeyiz Galatasaray on X, the club is determined to sign a left-footed centre-back this January. Bassey is reportedly among the names being considered, though he’s not the first choice.
The Istanbul giants had previously targeted Strahinja Pavlovic from AC Milan over the summer but failed to land him, with the Serbian star reportedly uninterested in a move to Turkey. Pavlovic remains Galatasaray’s top priority heading into the winter transfer window.
If that pursuit falls through, Bassey could become their plan B — though convincing Fulham to sell mid-season will be a tall order. The Nigerian has a contract until 2027, with an option for 2028, giving Fulham plenty of leverage.
In addition to Bassey, Galatasaray were also rumoured to be eyeing Ademola Lookman, another Nigerian talent currently shining at Atalanta. However, journalist Ali Naci Kucuk has poured cold water on the speculation, citing financial constraints that make the deal unrealistic at this time.
From Victor Osimhen to potential targets like Bassey and Lookman, Galatasaray’s growing Nigerian connection highlights a wider recognition of the country’s footballing influence in Europe. While Osimhen’s impact remains unforgettable, the club’s pursuit of Bassey signals their intent to keep that winning formula alive.
Whether Fulham allow their defensive rock to leave or not, one thing is certain — the Turkish champions are not done shopping in Nigeria’s football market just yet.
