Josko Gvardiol’s Return To Centre-Back Sparks Manchester City Revival

In 2023, Josko Gvardiol made headlines when he transferred from RB Leipzig to Manchester City for a staggering £77 million, making him the second-most expensive defender in football history — only behind Harry Maguire’s £80 million move to Manchester United in 2019.

The Croatian defender signed a five-year deal, and since then, he has quickly become one of the most reliable defenders in world football.

Finding His Footing Again

Last season wasn’t all smooth sailing for Gvardiol. Under Pep Guardiola, he was frequently deployed at left-back, a role that coincided with a tricky period for both player and team.

“Once it started, it was quite difficult to get out of,” Gvardiol admitted. “We spoke about it a lot of times… At the end, we managed to be in the Champions League again and be in the FA Cup final.”

Playing out of position challenged the 22-year-old, but it also showcased his versatility and tactical intelligence — qualities Guardiola values deeply.

Back Where He Belongs

This season, however, things have taken a positive turn. Gvardiol has returned to his preferred role as a left-sided centre-back, and both his confidence and City’s defensive solidity have improved noticeably.

“I’m happy to be back to my position,” he said. “Just play simple, protect the goal, defend the goal.”

It’s a return that has benefited not just the player but the entire backline — restoring balance and structure to City’s defensive setup as they aim to retain the Premier League title and push for another Champions League crown.

The Silent Pillar Of City’s Success

While attacking players often dominate headlines, Gvardiol’s calm presence, ball-playing ability, and reading of the game make him a crucial piece in Guardiola’s system.

As City’s campaign intensifies across multiple fronts, Gvardiol’s leadership at the back could be the difference-maker in their quest for more silverware.

With his confidence restored and his role reinstated, Josko Gvardiol looks set to remind the football world why he’s worth every penny of that £77 million.
