Javier Tebas Slams Cancellation Of Barcelona Vs Villarreal Miami Clash As ‘Blow To Spanish Football’s Future’

Spanish football’s bold bid to take La Liga overseas has hit a wall — and Javier Tebas isn’t happy about it.

The La Liga president described the cancellation of the proposed Barcelona vs Villarreal match in Miami as a “blow to Spanish football’s future,” after months of buildup, legal hurdles, and player protests finally forced the plan to collapse.

The fixture, initially approved by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in August, was set to make history as the first European top-flight league match ever staged in the United States, at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on December 20. But after growing opposition from players and clubs, the federation reversed its decision this week.

Tebas Hits Out At ‘Narrow-Minded’ Opposition

Tebas took to social media to vent his frustration, insisting that the decision represents a step backward for Spanish football’s global ambitions.

“Today, Spanish football has lost an opportunity to advance, project itself globally, and strengthen its future,” he wrote on X.
“The defence of ‘tradition’ is invoked from a narrow-minded and provincial perspective, while the true traditions of European football are threatened by decisions that destroy national leagues.”

He vowed that La Liga will continue pursuing international growth, saying the league remains committed to expanding its global reach “with rigour and conviction” — while still respecting its roots.

Protests And Player Backlash

The match’s cancellation comes after widespread protests across La Liga last weekend. Players refused to move for the first 15 seconds of matches to voice their displeasure at the decision to play abroad, claiming they had been excluded from discussions and left uncertain about logistics, insurance, and compensation.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick admitted his players were “not happy” with the original plan, while Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal said an overseas fixture would have been a “stain on the competition.”

Clubs were equally divided. Villarreal felt blindsided by the timing of the reversal, revealing they learned of the cancellation “10 minutes before kick-off” in their Champions League clash with Manchester City.

Divided Voices, Divided Vision

As BBC Sport’s Guillem Balague observed, the episode highlights how fragmented Spanish football remains. While La Liga saw the Miami fixture as a visionary step toward global relevance and new revenue streams, others viewed it as a rushed experiment lacking transparency and consensus.

Real Madrid even filed a formal complaint with Spain’s sports council to block the game, arguing it violated competitive fairness. Meanwhile, reports suggested Barcelona would be compensated, but Villarreal would not, adding to the tension.

Global Football’s New Frontier — But Not Yet For Spain

While Spain’s overseas venture falters, Serie A has announced plans to stage a league game between AC Milan and Como in Perth, Australia, next February — showing that European leagues remain determined to expand internationally.

For La Liga, however, the Miami setback serves as a reminder: ambition alone isn’t enough. Spanish football must first learn to speak with one voice before it can conquer global markets.
