Phil Salt And Harry Brook Power England To Dominant Win Over New Zealand

England turned on the heat in Christchurch as Phil Salt and Harry Brook delivered a masterclass in batting to crush New Zealand by 65 runs in the second T20. The explosive performance not only gave England a 1-0 series lead but also served as a strong statement of intent ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

It was fireworks all the way as England piled up a mammoth 236-4 — the highest-ever T20 score at Hagley Oval and their fifth highest in the format. Phil Salt continued his brilliant run with 85 off 56 balls, while captain Harry Brook unleashed a stunning 78 off just 35 deliveries, including five towering sixes.

The pair combined for a 129-run partnership that completely deflated the Black Caps, who struggled with dropped catches and inconsistent bowling. Jimmy Neesham’s costly drop of Brook summed up New Zealand’s fielding woes on a night they would rather forget.

New Zealand began their chase with some promise at 87-2 after nine overs, but Adil Rashid’s brilliance turned the game on its head. The leg-spinner claimed 4-32, while England’s fielding was flawless — taking ten sharp catches that sealed the deal.

With New Zealand bowled out for 171 in 18 overs, England’s dominance in all departments was clear. Brook’s captaincy also earned praise, not just for his tactics but for leading from the front with the bat.

Speaking after the match, Brook said,

“It felt good out there. It’s always nice to contribute, and doing it alongside Phil Salt in this new era is special. We kept our composure and played smart cricket.”

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner admitted his team had no answers, noting,

“When you get a 100-run partnership in T20, it’s hard to stop. England were smart with the way they played — hitting to the short side and keeping the scoreboard ticking.”

With this emphatic victory, England can clinch the series in Auckland on Thursday — and if their current form is anything to go by, the Kiwis will need something special to stop them.
