England’s growing injury list has added two more names as Katie Reid and Grace Clinton have both been forced to withdraw from the Lionesses’ October camp, dashing hopes of Reid’s long-awaited senior debut.
The Arsenal youngster, 19, had been set for her first call-up to the senior team following a string of impressive performances this season, stepping up confidently in place of the injured Leah Williamson. Unfortunately, a tight groin injury — which also kept her out of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Benfica — means she’ll have to wait a little longer for her England debut.
Reid’s withdrawal comes as another setback for manager Sarina Wiegman, whose squad has already been hit by injuries to Lauren James, Lauren Hemp, and Williamson, while Millie Bright recently announced her retirement from international duty.
Manchester City’s Grace Clinton also pulled out of the squad after missing her club’s last two games with what City boss Andree Jeglertz described as “a small injury.” Clinton, who joined City on deadline day, has endured a frustrating start to her new chapter and will now continue her rehabilitation at club level.
In Reid’s absence, Wiegman has handed a recall to Liverpool’s Grace Fisk, marking her first England call-up since 2020 and her debut opportunity under Wiegman. Despite Liverpool’s difficult start to the Women’s Super League campaign, Fisk’s solid defensive performances have caught the national team’s attention once again.
With Williamson and Bright both unavailable, Fisk’s inclusion adds much-needed depth to England’s back line — and it could be her chance to stake a claim for a more permanent spot.
Interestingly, Wiegman opted not to replace Clinton, leaving the squad at 24 players. While some expected Maisie Symonds or Ruby Mace to receive a late call-up, the England boss seems content with the midfield depth provided by Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, and rising talents Laura Blindkilde Brown and Missy Bo Kearns.
The Lionesses will face Brazil and Australia in two exciting friendlies, though their squad depth will be tested yet again. For Katie Reid, the focus now turns to recovery — and ensuring she returns in time to make the November England squad.
The Arsenal starlet’s composure and maturity have made her one of the standout young defenders in the Women’s Super League, and while her England debut is delayed, few doubt it’s only a matter of time.
