According to reports from ABC, Messi’s sprawling 16,000-square-metre property in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia was built on protected land without the required permits. The mansion, purchased in 2022 from Swiss businessman Philippe Amon, currently has no valid occupancy certificate, leaving Messi in hot water with local authorities.

A Legal Storm On Ibiza’s Coast

Authorities have stated that unless Messi resolves the issue, demolition is still on the table. A mayoral decree has already prevented further construction or modification on the property.

The villa, which boasts a 92-square-metre swimming pool and a private football pitch, remains unusable — unable to be rented, sold, or officially recognized as a legal residence.

City officials have opened proceedings concerning the mansion’s “illegal changes,” deepening the Argentine’s troubles in paradise.

Futuro Vegetal And The Climate Controversy

This isn’t Messi’s first Ibiza headache. In August 2024, environmental activist group Futuro Vegetal vandalized the property, splashing it with red and black paint to protest environmental inequality.

The activists later claimed responsibility, stating on X (formerly Twitter):

“We tinted Messi’s illegal mansion in Ibiza… The richest 1% of the population is responsible for the same amount of carbon emissions as the poorest two-thirds.”

The group accused authorities of supporting a system that harms the planet, linking their actions to a wider fight for climate justice.

Messi responded by filing a criminal damage lawsuit and seeking £50,000 in compensation for the vandalism.
