Eric Chelle Drops Troost-Ekong As Ajayi And Bassey Start Against Benin
Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle has made a bold tactical decision by dropping team captain William Troost-Ekong from the starting lineup in Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifying clash against Benin in Uyo.
In a surprising reshuffle, Semi Ajayi will partner Calvin Bassey at the center of defence, replacing the experienced Troost-Ekong. The move signals a shift toward a more dynamic defensive setup as the Super Eagles aim for a decisive win to keep their qualification dreams alive.
Zaidu Sanusi also returns to the starting eleven, taking over from Bruno Onyemaechi at left-back, while Samuel Chukwueze is handed a start on the wing in place of the suspended Ademola Lookman.
Chelle’s decision to trust Ajayi and Bassey at the back could be an attempt to inject renewed solidity against a Benin side managed by former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.
Meanwhile, in attack, Victor Osimhen remains the focal point, with Chukwueze expected to stretch the play and add creativity from the right flank.
The exclusion of Troost-Ekong, a consistent presence and leader in the team’s defence, marks one of the most significant lineup changes in recent games — and all eyes will be on how this new setup performs under pressure.
