Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly Earns First England Call-Up After Reece James Injury

Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly has received his first senior England call-up following the withdrawal of Reece James, who sustained an injury in Chelsea’s Premier League win over Liverpool.

James, who revealed a gash on his shin via Instagram after the game, has been ruled out after medical assessment. His absence opens the door for 20-year-old O’Reilly, who steps up from the England U21s for the fixtures against Wales (October 9) and Latvia (October 14).

O’Reilly’s Rise at Manchester City

O’Reilly, a lifelong City player since the age of eight, broke into Pep Guardiola’s first team last season, making 21 appearances and scoring five goals. He was also part of the squad that won the Club World Cup.

This season, O’Reilly has already made nine appearances, showcasing his versatility across full-back positions. Originally a number 10, Guardiola converted him into a defender, where his pace, physicality, and tactical awareness have stood out.

England’s Defensive Dilemma

With James sidelined, O’Reilly joins the squad as cover in wide defensive areas. His call-up highlights both his adaptability and the depth issues facing England boss Thomas Tuchel, who now has only Djed Spence as a natural right-back.

At well over six feet tall, O’Reilly adds physical presence to an already imposing England squad. His ability to play multiple roles could prove crucial as Tuchel prepares for the World Cup.

Analysis – A Deserved Reward

O’Reilly’s elevation is widely seen as a reward for his strong start to the 2025/26 season. He ranks highly for tackles, interceptions, and possession recoveries among City players, while also averaging 78 touches per game – numbers that underline his growing influence.

Though still adapting to his new defensive role, the 20-year-old’s work rate, versatility, and maturity have convinced both Guardiola and Tuchel that he can thrive at the highest level.
