Manchester united forward bryan mbeumo has called on his teammates to take accountability as the club finds itself in crisis following a dismal start to the 2025/26 season.
the red devils are currently 14th in the premier league, having secured just two wins from their opening six games — their worst league start since the premier league’s inception in 1992.
the latest setback came in a 3-1 defeat to brentford, where ironically, mbeumo — who joined united from brentford this summer for £71 million — faced his former club.
speaking to sky sports after the match, mbeumo didn’t shy away from the club’s problems:
“i think everyone in the team needs to take responsibility. when you play in a club this big, everyone needs to know what to do – as a team, we need to do better.”
despite the loss, the cameroon international was full of appreciation for the brentford faithful:
“obviously disappointed with the result, i had a warm welcome back from the fans and i will never forget that.”
amid mounting pressure on manager ruben amorim, who continues to be backed by ineo’s leadership despite fan unrest, mbeumo stressed the need to stay mentally focused:
“it’s not that hard [to block out the noise], obviously the main thing we see is on social media, so it’s just not going on there much, and you just have to stay focused on your own things.”
mbeumo added that the team’s priority is to listen to what’s happening internally, rather than being swayed by external criticism or media speculation.
following united’s worst start in over three decades, questions are once again being asked about amorim’s tactical decisions and ability to handle the pressure of managing such a high-profile club.
former chelsea star mikel obi went as far as calling his choices “not stubbornness, but stupidity.”
despite this, ineos have reaffirmed their support, stating “we will not sack him.”
but the margin for error is shrinking fast.
manchester united will look to bounce back when they host sunderland at old trafford this weekend, in what is now seen as a must-win game for amorim and his faltering squad.
with fan patience wearing thin and rival clubs capitalizing on united’s instability, the pressure is mounting from all sides.
mbeumo’s honest reflection shows that players are aware of the growing expectations at a club of united’s stature. but talk must now translate to performance — both on and off the pitch.
as always, sports market international will continue to bring you the best football blog insights, keeping a finger on the pulse of the beautiful game.
