Europe’s players pulled off a heart-stopping 15-13 Ryder Cup victory over the United States in New York, and they did it with a side of cheeky humor aimed at none other than Donald Trump.
As Rory McIlroy received a text from the US president, the victorious European squad couldn’t resist having a little fun. “Are you watching Donald Trump?” they sang in unison, turning their celebration into a playful jab at the well-known golf fan.
Trump, who made a brief appearance at the Bethpage Black course on Saturday, seemed to take it all in stride, responding on social media: “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!” Europe captain Luke Donald confirmed the good-natured exchange, telling BBC Sport, “We were having a moment together with the team, and Rory got a text from the president. We read it out and thought we’d have a little bit of banter. He seemed to take it in good spirits.”
McIlroy, who has played golf with Trump in the past, recently spoke fondly about the United States, calling it “the land of opportunity” and “the best country in the world.” On Saturday, he even acknowledged Trump as he walked past him on the first tee, keeping the friendly connection alive.
The European celebrations went into full swing as the team traveled back to their Long Island hotel. Social media captured Shane Lowry leading the squad in a chant created for McIlroy by European fans. The Irishman, a close friend of McIlroy, belted out, “He’s in your head, he’s in your head, Rory, Rory, Rory…” to the tune of the 1990s Cranberries hit ‘Zombie’. The scene echoed McIlroy’s own jubilant celebrations in Italy two years ago, proving some traditions never die.
Europe may have taken the trophy, but their playful trolling added an extra layer of entertainment to a Ryder Cup that will be remembered for both skill and humor.
