Barcelona midfielder Gavi could be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery on his right knee, dealing a major blow to both club and country.
The 21-year-old, who played in Barcelona’s opening two matches of the season, picked up the injury during a training session in August. Initial fears suggested a recurrence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that forced him out for almost a year in 2023. Fortunately, scans ruled out another ACL setback, but doctors confirmed damage to his medial meniscus.
In a statement, Barcelona confirmed:
“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. Recovery time is estimated at around four to five months.”
Head coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the huge loss but praised Gavi’s determination:
“He’s a player with a big heart and a lot of emotion. It’s not easy for this team, because he has a huge quality for us, but every one of us will support him and will help him to reach his level again.”
Since making his debut in 2021, Gavi has become one of Barcelona’s most influential young stars. He became the club’s fourth-youngest debutant, has already made 155 appearances, scored 10 goals, and lifted five trophies.
Unfortunately, injuries have slowed his momentum. His ACL tear in November 2023 kept him sidelined for 11 months, and this latest setback means another lengthy spell away from action.
Currently sitting second in La Liga, five points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid with a game in hand, Barcelona will now need to find creative solutions in midfield during Gavi’s absence. Flick’s side will look to players like Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and new signings to step up in the coming months.
Despite the setback, Gavi’s fighting spirit suggests he’ll come back stronger once again. For Barcelona and Spain, his return in early 2026 could prove pivotal ahead of key competitions.
