Javier Tebas Warns Real Madrid Over Refereeing Report

La Liga president Javier Tebas has cautioned that Real Madrid’s proposed report on Spanish refereeing could harm the reputation of the competition amid renewed tensions over officiating decisions.

The Spanish giants have long voiced frustration at refereeing calls both on the pitch and in the VAR booth, but their criticism has grown increasingly intense in recent months. Reports suggest that Madrid are preparing a comprehensive dossier on refereeing standards in Spain, sparking widespread debate.

Tebas Issues Stern Warning

Speaking at a La Liga event for Panini, Tebas avoided commenting directly on the latest refereeing controversy but insisted that Madrid’s approach risks damaging the credibility of the league as a whole.

“As they said it covered all Spanish refereeing, it will cover all clubs…” Tebas remarked, hinting that such a broad report could create unnecessary divisions within the competition.

Madrid’s Growing Frustration

Real Madrid’s discontent with officiating is not new. Over the years, they have repeatedly clashed with referees and La Liga authorities over perceived inconsistencies. However, the club’s willingness to formalize its complaints in a public report marks a significant escalation.

Potential Fallout

Tebas stressed that refereeing reforms should be addressed within the existing football framework rather than through unilateral action by a single club. Critics fear Madrid’s dossier could inflame tensions, undermine trust in officials, and spark further conflicts between clubs and La Liga.

With the 2025/26 season still in its early stages, this dispute threatens to overshadow on-pitch matters, adding to the long-running debate over refereeing standards in Spanish football.
