In a stunning turn of events at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica suffered a 3–2 defeat to Qarabag, leaving their Champions League ambitions in jeopardy. Despite taking the lead, the Portuguese giants were unable to contain the Azerbaijani side, who delivered one of the biggest shocks of the group stage so far.
Benfica 1–0 – Rafa Silva opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a well-placed finish from the edge of the box.
Qarabag 1–1 – Qarabag equalized through a quick counter attack finished by Kady Borges in the 28th minute.
Benfica 2–1 – João Mário restored Benfica’s lead in the 54th minute with a clinical strike.
Qarabag 2–2 – Michel struck in the 70th minute, capitalizing on defensive lapses.
Qarabag 3–2 – A late winner in the 88th minute from Ramil Sheydayev sealed the historic victory for the visitors.
Benfica started strong, controlling possession and creating several early chances. Rafa Silva’s opener seemed to set the tone, but Qarabag’s disciplined defense and swift counterattacks frustrated the home side.
After Benfica regained the lead early in the second half, Qarabag’s resilience shone through. Michel’s equalizer and Sheydayev’s dramatic late goal highlighted Benfica’s defensive vulnerabilities and Qarabag’s tactical maturity.
Ramil Sheydayev (Qarabag): Heroic finish to seal the win.
Kady Borges (Qarabag): Constant threat on the wing, providing pace and creativity.
Rafa Silva (Benfica): Bright attacking spark, opening the scoring.
Possession: Benfica 61% – 39% Qarabag
Shots on Target: Benfica 7 – 4 Qarabag
Corners: Benfica 8 – 2 Qarabag
Pass Accuracy: Benfica 84% – 76% Qarabag
This shocking result puts Benfica under pressure in their group, showing that even top European clubs cannot underestimate smaller teams with tactical discipline. Qarabag, meanwhile, boosts their reputation as a giant-killer and strengthens their positioning in the group.
