Wolves have completed the signing of Girona defender Ladislav Krejci on an initial loan deal.
The 26-year-old centre-half, who can also play in midfield, will complete a £26m permanent move to Molineux until 2030 if certain clauses are met.
The Czech Republic international moved to Girona last summer and made 35 appearances in all competitions as they finished 16th in La Liga, surviving by a point.
He joined the Spanish club from Sparta Prague, where he spent five years and won two league titles.
Wolves, who have lost their opening two Premier League games, have already signed full-backs Jackson Tchatchoua and David Moller Wolfe and forwards Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias this summer.
They are also looking to bring it at least one striker before Monday’s transfer deadline as they try to keep forward Jorgen Strand Larsen at the club.
Newcastle have had two bids of £50m and £55m rejected by Wolves for the Norway international.
He came off the bench to score twice in the final eight minutes in Tuesday’s 3-2 EFL Cup win over West Ham.
Boss Vitor Pereira said afterwards: “Football is football and every player has a price, even [Lionel] Messi or Cristiano [Ronaldo]. I understand football but for me it’s very important for us. We will see what happens.
“If it’s my decision, of course [he stays]. He is a very important player.
“I know a lot of players in my career in this situation and they have asked me not to play but he wants to play every time. He wants to help the team.
“In the last seven or eight months I am with him, I know him very well. He will never force [a move]. Of course we know football is football. You must be ready for everything but I want to keep the best players and this kind of player with us.”
