Nigeria’s top sprinter, Konyinsola Ajayi, insists he is not intimidated by the blistering form of American athletes as he prepares for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
Ranked 13th in the world this year, Ajayi is among the few Nigerian athletes who have already booked their spots for the global event, scheduled to run from September 13 to 21. His qualification came on the back of an impressive performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals of the men’s 100m.
Speaking after returning to Nigeria for the National Trials in Lagos last weekend, Ajayi explained that his focus remains firmly on his training rather than the times being clocked elsewhere.
“I’m not bothered about what anyone else is running,” the 20-year-old said. “The key is to stay fit, execute my races well, and peak when it matters most.”
Ajayi had to withdraw from the 100m final at the national trials as a precautionary measure to avoid injury, but he remains confident about his build-up to Tokyo.
While Ajayi was competing in Lagos, US sprinter Kenny Bednarek stole the spotlight at the American Championships with a stunning personal best of 9.79s to win the title. Several other American athletes also dipped under 10 seconds, further intensifying the competition expected in Tokyo.
Despite these performances, Ajayi insists the World Championships will come down to execution on the day, not hype around pre-event favourites.
With few Nigerian athletes qualified for the World Championships so far, Ajayi’s presence provides a major boost for Team Nigeria’s sprint ambitions. His steady progression since breaking onto the scene has made him one of the country’s brightest medal hopes in track and field.
As the countdown to Tokyo continues, all eyes will be on whether Ajayi can translate his promise into podium success on athletics’ biggest stage outside the Olympics.
