Inter have decided to pursue Ademola Lookman after positive discussions with his entourage, which is trying to find an escape route from Atalanta. While personal terms won’t be an issue, haggling with La Dea will be more problematic, Fabrizio Romano reports (via SOSFanta).
The player and his agents are leaning on a past promise to be sold this summer after agreeing to stay despite PSG’s courtship last year. However, the Bergamaschi have already parted ways with Mateo Retegui. Plus, they would rather send him abroad.
Inter plot to offer €40M for Lookman. There haven’t been formal contacts with Atalanta so far. The figure could perhaps suffice for foreign sides, but the Orobici will likely want more in this case. Atletico Madrid are keen on the Nigerian ace but need to offload one of their forwards first.
The Scudetto runner-ups have some alternatives but will focus on their top target for a while. For now, they haven’t deepened the conversations for Nicolas Gonzalez, who’s a lot more attainable, and Lois Openda, who’s pricey as well.
Our Take on Inter and Lookman
If they have the chance to get him without breaking the bank, they should definitely go for it, even though it’d overshadow the investment for Ange-Yoan Bonny. They probably wouldn’t have done the deal with Parma if they thought it was possible at the time. Everything seems to be driven by his representatives. Even with the proper premises, Atalanta are one of the toughest bargainers out there, and they have already filled their coffers this summer. The counterparty will have to be careful not to be sucked into a saga that undermines easier pursuits.
