Raul Asencio has renewed his contract with Real Madrid till 2031, according to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic.
Asencio was originally on a Castilla contract, but now Real Madrid have given him a salary boost and a release clause of one billion euros.
Real Madrid triggered the clause to extend Asencio’s contract till 2029 in March, something that is common among Castilla graduates who become first-team fixtures. But, after discussions, they have decided to extend it until 2031.
Asencio has been a revelation for Real Madrid this year, with multiple good performances in a season filled with injuries to their defenders.
He has not only improved his overall game, but has also gained the maturity required to be a top-level player, cementing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.
Asencio will be important in the Club World Cup, as he is one of only two first-team central defenders who are fully fit to start the tournament — the other being Spanish teammate Dean Huijsen. Antonio Rudiger is expected to return at some point during the tournament.
