PL Transfer Window: Two Phases, Key Dates, TAA’s CWC Fate

Who will be the big signings of the summer in the Premier League? It has been confirmed that there will be two transfer windows this summer due to the new-look FIFA Club World Cup. There will be a short window after the UEFA Champions League final, and then a longer window that runs until September 1. We explain everything you need to know about the summer transfer window and the key dates.

The dates for the Premier League summer transfer window have been confirmed, with a twist to the normal opening times meaning there will be two different windows.

The post-season period will see clubs able to sign players and strengthen their squads ahead of the 2025/26 season.

However, due to the new-look FIFA Club World Cup, the window will open, close, and then reopen and close again after the new Premier League campaign has started.

Here’s all you need to know about the changes and the key dates.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The Premier League have confirmed the summer transfer window will open on Sunday, June 1, a day after the UEFA Champions League final in Munich.

It will remain open until Tuesday, June 10 due to an “exceptional registration period” relating to the Club World Cup, which starts on June 15.

The window will then reopen on Monday, June 16 and will close on Monday, September 1, two weeks after the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Key summer transfer window dates

June 1 Transfer window opens

June 10 Transfer window closes

June 15 Club World Cup starts

June 16 Transfer window reopens

August 16 2025/26 PL season starts

September 1 Transfer window closes

When is the Club World Cup?
The revamped 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 15 until July 13.

Chelsea and Manchester City will be representing the Premier League and could receive up to £97m if they win the tournament.

The changes to the summer transfer window dates mean clubs have a short window to sign and register players ahead of the tournament.

Chelsea are in Group D at the Club World Cup with Flamengo, Esperance de Tunis and a third club yet to be determined, after Club Leon were removed over multi-club ownership regulations. Manchester City are in Group G with Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus.

When does 2025/26 Premier League season start?

The Premier League 2025/26 season gets started on Saturday, August 16.

That means the summer transfer window will be open during the first two weeks of the season.

The first international break for World Cup qualifying is on September 1.

Can Alexander-Arnold play at Club World Cup?

Real Madrid were keen to land Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the Club World Cup as Xabi Alonso prepares to contest the tournament as his first job in charge of the club.

Alexander-Arnold was out of contract on June 30 and Liverpool and Madrid agreed a deal that saw the England international make a move before his deal was up.

Alonso’s side take on Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami in their first game of the Club World Cup.

With a transfer window opened earlier than usual to accommodate pre-Club World Cup transfers, Alexander-Arnold is free to play in the competition for Los Blancos.

FIFA have given a window between June 27 and July 3 when teams at the Club World Cup can register a maximum of two new players.
