Ajax prepare to sell Akpom

Chuba Akpom has been deemed surplus to requirements at Ajax with the Dutch side, Ajax Amsterdam prepared to sell him in the summer.

This comes after Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip revealed his plans to integrate some of the club’s youth players into the first team at the expense of last year next season according to Algemeen Dagblad.

Akpom was brought in to compete with Brian Brobbey for a place in the starting lineup but has failed to justify the £12.2m fee Ajax paid Middlesbrough for his services.

The 28-year-old joined Ajax from English Championship club Middlesbrough last summer for £12.2m but has failed to impress so far despite scoring 10 goals in 21 appearances averaging a goal every 79 minutes.

The former Arsenal prodigy who has seen only 783 minutes of action for the club and seven other players signed last June in the next transfer window.

He was linked with a return to England during the January transfer window as Everton and Luton Town wanted him on loan and a return to English football next summer will not be ruled out.

Akpom began his career at Arsenal, coming through the youth ranks to play 12 first-team games, but the majority of his time at Emirates Stadium was spent on loan to Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull, Brighton, and Belgian side Sint-Truiden.
