Marcus Rashford eyeing Rooney’s record

Marcus Rashford believes he definitely “holds a chance” of breaking all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney’s record at Manchester United.

Rashford managed a season-best tally of 30 strikes for the Reds in 2022/23, bringing his total number of goals for the club to 123, as it stands.

Legendary striker Rooney, who currently leads the way on 253, managed his haul in 559 games for United, with Marcus, so far, having only played 359 in total.

The topic – which was discussed on the latest episode of The Debate with Gary Neville – is something our current no.10 isn’t ruling out of the equation, after he committed his long-term future to the club when signing a new contract recently.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” conceded the United forward, ahead of this weekend’s friendly double-header with Lens and Athletic Club.

“But I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists, so there’s definitely a chance that it can happen and I’ve actually spoken to Wazza [Rooney] about it.

“He wants me to do it. He said it would be good for me to do it because I’ve grown up at the club, stuff like that. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to try to make that happen.”
Coming off the back of Rashy’s terrific goalscoring form last season, Reds boss Erik ten Hag suggested that the 25-year-old can further improve on his levels in front of goal, with a target of 40 suggested by the Dutchman.

With a spring in his step and the dust firmly settled after penning that five-year contract at Old Trafford, Marcus believes everything is beginning to come together in M16, ahead of what should be another exciting campaign.

“I feel like, at the age I’m at, I’ve still got a big opportunity to try to do that, with the timing too, I feel like we’re closer than what we think,” he added, when asked about the potential of accruing more silverware.

“But we still need to take those extra steps and, at the minute, we’ve got a manager who’s fully dedicated to just winning at all costs.

“He just wants us to be the best we can be individually, as best as we can be as a team. At the end of the day, he wants us to win trophies.”
